Unlocking the Maritime Potential of Sri Lanka

Maritime trade serves as a cornerstone of the global economy, experiencing significant growth from the mid-20th century to the early 21st century. This growth is attributed to advancements in technology within seaborne trade, the emergence of container shipping, the introduction of mega ships and alternative fuels, and the establishment of world-class ports.

Situated strategically in the heart of the Indian Ocean, approximately 20 nautical miles off the traditional East-West maritime trade route, which witnesses over 60,000 ships annually, Sri Lanka has emerged as a pivotal player in the maritime and aviation sectors.

    Unlocking the Maritime
    Potential of Sri Lanka

The Port of Colombo, a key transhipment hub in South Asia, serves as a central point complemented by several other ports across the country, including Hambantota in the south.

Sri Lanka, positioned as a low-middle income country in Southern Asia, has historically been a significant trading hub. Renowned for its exports of textiles, ceramics, spices, and precious gems, Sri Lanka’s geostrategic location has contributed to its status as a crucial node in ancient trade networks.

The strategic importance of Sri Lanka’s geographical position and its robust connectivity to international shipping routes have positioned it at the forefront of global shipping trends. With a higher proportion of world trade shifting towards Asia, Sri Lanka is poised for exponential growth in its maritime services industry. Ranked 25th in maritime economies according to UNCTAD (2019), Sri Lanka’s shipping services industry has become increasingly prominent.

We are pleased to announce our strategic commitment to harnessing and enhancing Sri Lanka’s maritime potential. Through our efforts, we aim to seize and retain business opportunities, contributing to our nation’s economic growth by generating foreign income and employment opportunities.

Ocean Maritime Ceylon’s continued success will bolster the maritime industry in Sri Lanka, fostering trust among our valued customers and stakeholders.

    Port of Colombo

Situated on the southwestern shores, the bustling capital city, Colombo, is the largest and busiest port in Sri Lanka, ranking among the top 35 globally. Recognized for its strategic location in the Indian Ocean, the Port of Colombo plays a pivotal role in global trade.

With a capacity of 4.1 million TEUs and a dredged depth exceeding 15 meters, Colombo Harbour stands among the largest artificial harbours worldwide. Ocean Maritime, headquartered in Colombo, is well-positioned to offer comprehensive agency support services to vessels calling at both the harbour and anchorage areas.

    Port of Galle

Situated prominently in the southern region of Sri Lanka and strategically positioned near the primary East-West shipping lane, Galle has emerged as a convenient hub for vessels seeking to procure supplies, urgent spares, and facilitate crew and security personnel changes, all while minimizing deviation from major sea routes. Partnering with launch boat service operators for swift service, Ocean Maritime Ceylon offers access to vessels calling off port limits in Galle, ensuring rapid and reasonably priced assistance. Linked to a road expressway network, Galle provides quick access to the capital city and international airports, enabling direct embarkation or disembarkation of crew members from vessels at OPL Galle. Galle serves as the sole transfer point for all PMSCs operating in the Indian Ocean region to counter piracy threats, with an operational armoury under the direct purview of the Sri Lanka Navy for the intermediate storage of arms and equipment.

    Port of Hambantota

    Port of Trincomalee

Nestled along the eastern coastline of the island, Trincomalee showcases the world’s second-best natural harbour, boasting vast water and land expanses nearly ten times greater than those of the Port of Colombo. Presently catering to bulk carriers carrying industrial cargo such as wheat, fertiliser, coal, and cement, Trincomalee is also ideal for handling project cargo. Despite comparatively lesser investment in port infrastructure, many passenger vessels dock at Trincomalee due to its scenic coastlines and historical sites. The team at Ocean Maritime Ceylon is well-equipped to handle operations in Trincomalee and deliver quality service to vessels requiring agency support.
